Certain Things
There are some things i particularly find annoying: skweaky doors, nails on a chalkboard, bad colonge/perfume, poorly parked cars, slow (but not elderly) pedestrians, bad movies, dependency/clingyness, tardiness (but because i'm brown i'll let this slide to a certain degree), and undisciplined, spoiled, and whiney children.
The other day at the VBS our church is putting on, there was this 3 year old, 3 going on 4, she really is a cutey if she just stands there, but the minute she opens her mouth, the contents of Pandora's Box emerge. Now, when i saw her throw her first tantrum, i just thought she was having a bad day and didn't have her nap, but as they day progressed, rather than get quieter as most sleepy children get, she got louder by then end of the VBS day it was evident she was worthy of the title her cousin gave her, "brat". now, i don't like calling children brats, unless they live up to the standard of the word in every degree, and this one did. it all accumulated to the very last event of the day.
Just before the kids were dismissed to leave and as we were closing in worship, one of the leaders picked a girl to hand out candy from a basket to all the kids. This child, the brat, runs up to the front, tries to grab the basket of candy from the girl, when she doesn't get it, she takes a few steps back...stands still... brings her hands up to her eyes....gives out a scream... and comences to cry hysterically. Her mom at this time standing to my right does absolutely nothing! she just stands and watches her kid throw a tantrum as the pastor is trying to close the VBS and the rest of the children are trying to figure out if they should watch the brat or pay attention to the pastor. Finally after about 20 seconds of her brat kid crying in front of everyone and near the microphones, the mother goes toward her and tries to pick her up, doesn't work. the kid runs toward the girl with the candy and grabs a handful, her mom goes after her and tries to pry her away, much to her failure, the brat jumps out of her hands and runs back to the candy. now the kid is grabbing at the poor girl with the candy who will now never volunteer for anything ever again. after a while the senior pastor's wife has to get involved and take the kid off the poor girl. the mother just standing back and letting the pastor's wife deal with her kid.
at the end of it all, the girl got no candy, and her mom finally took her away.
i don't blame the entire episode on the child, most of it is her parents always giving her what she wants and not using "the wooden spoon" on her.
i grew up with parents who implemented corporal punishment and i'm glad they did, thanks to "the wooden spoon" i would never dare throw a tantrum like that kid, even at home let alone a public place.
in conclusion, it's like my mom always says "it's because they didn't get a proper spanking" that children turn out as spoiled and whiney brats when they get older.
