Weekend Update
1. i spent my last 3 days at UBC's Model UN (MUN) conference. it was awesome, i got back home a few hours ago and moved to taking a nap, that motion did not meet quorum, and subsequently did not pass.
It was a weekend of debates, drafting resoulutions, and making motions. it was incredibly fun, perhaps not the funnest weekend of all weekends, but definitely the most productively fun.
Our 4 member delegation represented the Republic of Ghana and was composed entirely of members from UBC. Each person was admited to one of either: General Assembly 1, General Assembly 3, African Union, or Peace Building Commission. I represented Ghana in the Peace Building Commission- a body formed by and responsible to the UN Security Council that came into existance as of a UN meeting held in December 2005, thus the meeting at UBC MUN was the first either real or simulated- the minutes, reports and resoulutions passed at this meeting will be sent to the Peace and Security division of Foreign Affairs Canada to be reviewed and kept in record. (very exiciting)
We passed a total of 3 resoultions all of which were centered around the subject matter of Haiti- addressing the economic, social and political instablility that is currently going on within its borders. In liu of upcoming elections a resolution was passed to aid the interim government in carrying out those elections and calling for the support by the international community to offer it's support to ensure these elections follow through on the proposed dates. The other resolutions address installing security forces within Haiti in conjunction with the democratic government that results from the nearing elections needs for such security to make way for the clauses of the third resolution which calls for economic and social development after political stability is established.
the last two resolutions were proposed, presented, voted on and passed in a 2 hour time-frame that saw the haste of proceedings but the cooperation of all delegates.
if you've survived reading all this i congratulate you as only IR and poli sci geeks would only find this information even vaguely enticing.
2. a diplomat: a person who can tell you to go to hell in such a way that you actually look forward to making the trip- Caskie Stinett, Out of the Red, 1960
3. "The air was thick with quips, the ripostoes, the sallies, the jibes, the puns, like showers of arrows at the Battle of Little Big Horn, and as always in the company of witty people, never was there a joke attempted or told" - A Monk Swimming, Malacy McCourt
4. attended exodus worship nite on friday. a small gathering, but enjoyable
5. loved driving into downtown Vancouver every morning- drove in as the sun rose and then drove out as the sun set- i love it here, i would not move, not even for a rich boyfriend- i look forward to the day when i can do it every morning
6. i am in desperate need of having to do something mind-numbing, go shopping, play billiards, bowling, something- my mind is so overwhelmed with information i need to let it ooze out of my ear
7. i need to go lay down...i feel my head floating away from my body... please excuse my absence.
