Vicarious Living

1. i'm reading a book by one of my favourite authors, Bill Bryson. he travels around the world and then comedically retells his adventures.
i'm now reading about his trip to Australia, and i want to get lost in the outback staring at death in the face of a taipan, while clinging onto my last drop of water in the cooler/water bottle... well not lost, and probably not looking at a snake, more like thirsty and can't decide on which coffee shop to visit next in Sydney Harbour.

2. so yesterday i woke up earlier than i had to, for no real reason other than the birds outside my window were getting annoyingly loud. i get a call from my mom asking me to run a few errands for her, and i run around vancouver and part of richmond (over a bridge and inconveniently confusing) to get back home at 12. at which point i realize my registration date opened at 10 for the fall and by this time i'm sure most of my classes are full, well only 4 of 10 that i wanted were actually full, and it wasn't too much trouble finding others to take their place.

time flies by.... it's 3:20 i'm about to rush out the door when i get a call on the home phone and my cell, sammy calls to ask what time we're leaving for campus... 3:30, and my youth pastor calls to talk about internship at the church- a matter i'm interested in but don't have time to discuss at this very moment as my feet are on fire and i have to get to campus before the bookstore closes.

sammy's going to be another 10 minutes, so i figure i have time to change into my new shorts, i pull them up put the button through the hole and it off it pops and now the button's on the floor, i rush downstairs, sew the button back onto my pants while still wearing them, with only the drooping zipper to hold them up. i rush back upstairs, 15 minutes now elapsed, and i grab my stuff and run out the door, the engine light is on in my car, and i start driving praying it won't start flashing.

we get to campus at 4:05, and just miss amrita- who we were suppose to meet at 4. my class doesn't start till 7 so i go to the bookstore, buy some more overpriced textbooks, and go to the sub eat something- as i forgot to do that all day and now i'm light headed. 5:30 rolls around and i'm getting bored of my book, i go check my mail and find out my class is cancelled because my prof is "feeling sick".

i decide to go back home, when i get to the parking lot someone asks me for my parking stub- i just paid $4.25 for parking and $2.75 for a semi-filling slice of high calorie pizza- i ask for $3.00 he's like i don't have anything... i say bye and go home. once i get home i figure i'll do some more reading and get ahead in the class, my mom comes home early and asks me to wash the car- which took more time than i'd hoped... i came in with cold feet and a sore throat.

now to you the reader, try to calculate how much time was wasted between the time i woke up and the time i came home... if you do it right your answer should be... the whole day. i wasted a whole day.
